About us

The Eclipse Musicians are a collective of the most wonderfully skilled and playfully creative musicians that perform songs for weddings, private events, corporate functions and bespoke productions. We are dreamers that use live music to channel the entire vision of the experience that is your event.

Founded in 2017 by Rachel O’Brien as a regular events band, and transformed by 2019 into a collective of musical talents within our city, we collaborate together to shape and deliver the most joyful live performance experiences.

We share our performances amongst each other, giving us the flexibility to perform your favourite songs as largely as a nine-piece show band, and as intimately as an acoustic duo.

These are the faces that make up the Eclipse Musicians collective. Off-season, we are under ten musicians that share performance bookings amongst each other. During the peak of the summer events season, we swell up to under twenty to accommodate larger band formations and more complex bookings.

The story of

Eclipse

Our director, Rachel, was planning her own wedding over 2017 and 2018, and struggled to find a good music vendor. She and her partner, Nathan, as musicians, knew how important a role music played in setting the tone for their wedding day. It was one of their top three priorities of vendors to invest in. (The other two priorities were good photography and very good food; two things Rachel would still stand by.)

For her own destination wedding in New Zealand (which you can see here on our blog and here featured in Together Journal), she pictured having a glamorous band in the centre of the garden, right by the pop-up bar, where everybody dressed fabulously, like something out of Sex and the City. The musicians’ songs, their presence, and their visuals would absolutely complement and strengthen the escapist world that she was creating.

At the time, back in Australia, Rachel and Nathan both performed music casually in a cover band – Nathan as a drummer and Rachel as a bassist. The original prototype of Eclipse. It was born about a year or two before, amongst university friends. As a group of music students at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), majoring in either Jazz or Contemporary Performance, they used Eclipse as a means to expand their song repertoire knowledge and to gain extra gigs.

Rachel’s whole wedding planning process became deeply fascinating and a huge creative outlet for her. Prior to WAAPA and cover music, she had gained her BA (Design) in Graphic Design and Photography, and she had worked in the marketing teams of luxury fashion and jewellery brands, which strengthened her love of art and fashion. Planning her wedding opened a world where the visual expressiveness of design and the human connection that music brings came together. It sparked her to evaluate what it meant to perform at an event and what music actually has to contribute.

The experience showed her everything that should transform in Eclipse in order for that rudimentary version of the band to be everything she would have wanted for her own wedding day. Out of that, Rachel remodelled the band to have it re-emerge as a tight-knit collective of musicians that are well trained on their instruments, that are fun and have presence, and who are willing to enhance the overall ambience of an event by buying into its aesthetic and tone.

“Musicians should enhance every aspect of an event. It’s not just our responsibility to perform a song well. Fantastic presence comes when all the elements support each other. The soul of the melodies, rhythm and lyrics. The musicians that dress cohesively with the venue’s aesthetics and floristry. Artful lighting that falls onto the stage. An inviting scent that carries across the room. With that, musicians do not just stand alone. They become the puzzle piece that fits in with everything else to create an incredible artwork.”
